OMG - Catasauqua Lake, no more

Back in April I wrote two articles on the Catasauqua Lake.  The Catasauqua Rod and Gun Club built the lake many years ago and after the Rod and Gun Club disbanded the lake became somewhat mucky.  Hanover Township bought the lake from the County for $1.00 and according to an article in the Catasauqua Press, "We (Hanover Township) have invested over a million dollars in the park."  So guess what those scallywags did!!!!!  At the Township Council meeting of July 20 they renamed the Catasauqua Lake, it is now called Lake Hanover.

No wonder they never returned my phone calls about the Catasauqua Lake, they were planning on changing the name all the time.  Now I agree that the Township did a wonderful job in re-doing  Canal Park, it is beautiful, but they did not have to change the name.  They said they are changing the name because it actually lies in Hanover Township.  Well people, do we realize that Catasauqua Road, is not in Catasauqua or that Pennsylvania Avenue is not in Pennsylvania.

If your going to rename something it is usually done in honor of someone.  Such as JFK Airport, or  Reagan National  Airport or when they rename streets or parks to honor someone.  Honor someone Hanover Township, not yourselves for spending money.

Well, I know one thing, those two manmade islands out there are Beverly's Island and the Isle of Parke and no one can change that! And that's......another day in Catasauqua!!!!

As I was sitting at Happy Hour......

As I was sitting at Happy Hour today in Catty, no not what your thinking. This is at 11:00 AM to 12 Noon, Wednesdays at Salem UCC in Catty. There is a small lunch for anyone who would like to come, mostly seniors (and me). Since I do find myself not working occasionally on a Wednesday I like to go for a nice bowl of soup made by Shirley Turner. Today I sat with Dan Turner and I asked him about the Catasauqua Lake. Should of called him when I was trying to find out the information! Because as my friend LeeAnn had commented on Facebook about her father and grandfather going there, the Catasauqua Rod and Gun Club built the lake, thusly I am guessing that's why they called it Catasauqua Lake. Dan told me that he went fishing there alot, it wasn't that deep and he could wade out to the middle.

I found that Robert G. Gifford Sr. started the Catasauqua Rod and Gun Club, and that he just passed away in February at the age of 86. So I guess that gives us some sort of time line to.

So I guess that's one mystery solved, and maybe I will learn more as I explore and that's ....another day in Catasauqua.

Catty has a Lake?

About 10 years ago I was reading the paper about the Catasauqua Lake, and I think.... Catty has a lake? Well, technically no, Catasauqua Lake is located in Hanover Township. It is a 4 1/2 acre manmade lake. Hanover Township bought the lake from Lehigh County for $1.00 over a decade ago. When I visited it 10 years ago is was a tad nasty, all green with algae.

Now I read in both the Catty Press and Morning Call that the lake is being restocked after the Lake had been dredged out. If you Google Map the lake and click on the satellite view, you can see it from above as a dry lake bed, which is kinda cool. The lake in now 9 feet deep all around and they have added docks. There are even little islands in the lake, I have named the big one Bev's Island, just because I don't think they are named and I think they should be.

It really is beautiful I went Monday and took some pictures. The dock scared me because it was plastic wood, but it is really sturdy and I eventually got over my fear. The paper mentioned that you cannot fish the lake yet. The fish need about three years to rebuild their population. I did see one fish, I believe it was a minnow.

As for why it is named Catasauqua Lake and when it was built, I don't know. I cannot find any information online and Hanover Township did not return my phone calls, probably because they thought I was some crazy lady, I tried to explained that I do this blog, but it made me sound crazier. If I do get answers I will let you know. In the meantime that's......another Day in Catasauqua.
