Frozen in Catasauqua

I don't care
What they're going to say
Let the storm rage on,
The cold never bothered me anyway!

Well, that might be good for Elsa, but that is not good enough for me.  This winter in Catty didn't start out that bad.  December wasn't that cold but then came January, February and now March.  I just came back to the office and they are brining the streets here is in Allentown for some more snow this weekend.  I haven't seen much predicted 1 to 3 inches maybe.  Some mornings when I drive down Third Street in Catty I am in awe of the snow/ice mounds everywhere.  Where does the next snow go?

I don't think the snow bothers me as much as does the cold.  The sun burns bright today but the temperature is in the 20's.  The ice doesn't melt.  After lasts weekend brief warm temperatures my back yard turned first into mud, then a lake and now a small frozen pond.  Since my Mother parks out in the driveway she has come up with a creative way to get to her car.  Instead of going straight down the yard she has devised a clever path whereby she hangs a right at our shed then climbs the fence, swings from the tree and lands on her car.  Okay - it might not be as complicated as that but when my mom tells me that's what I envision.

But take heart Catasauqua, the sun is shining and it is 21 days until Spring - so what if the real feel temperature is 18 degrees and the low tonight will be zero, frolic in the sunshine and know that next weekend starts daylight savings time, so it will be light and cold longer every day.

So stay warm fellow Catasauquians and take heart - before you know it we will be complaining about the heat.....and that's Another Day in Catasauqua.

Snow by any Other Name Would Still Be.........

Out of the bosom of the Air,
Out of the cloud-folds of her garments shaken,
Over the woodlands brown and bare,
      Over the harvest-fields forsaken,
            Silent, and soft, and slow
Descends the snow. - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

At first we look for snow, it's poetic,  we love when snow blankets the ground on Christmas Eve, but when it goes on and on we start to get a little testy about it.   In general I don't mind it - but I hate the ice.  I hate trying to walk on ice and I hate shoveling it.

On Sunday I thought it would be a great day to take Petey for his first ever walk since the snow started blocking the side walks.  It was warm, the sun was shining and I was antsy.  I have been having problems with my knees so whenever it is snows or is icy I don't walk Petey because he pulls too much sometimes - I don't want to slip and fall and take a chance on hurting myself more.

When I got the harness Petey got so excited - he couldn't contain himself.  I don't think I ever saw him so excited.  Parke helped me get Petey down the porch and to the sidewalk.  Oakley (a cat) was on the porch so that's always an experience in itself and I am having problems stepping down with my knees.

So off we went.  I must say we were both disappointed.  I could not get off the block, the corner at the end of the block was not clear.  There was no path to cross.  I was very surprised considering it is a bus stop for the kids.  I could see that all the corners were clear up ahead so I was really bummed.  I didn't want to take a chance walking on the ice to cross.  I would of went around the block but the path down the street was narrow and Petey and I are wide.

So back we went back pass our house and down Walnut Street for a bit and back.  I would of love to gone farther and I am sure Petey would of to.

A funny thing about snow removal and where I live (the house next to me is half in Catty (Lehigh County) and half in North Catty (Northampton County).  Between the neighbor and I we have 3 cars - we park on Howertown Road.(My mom is out back in the driveway)  When the snow got higher and higher we started piling in back of the neighbor's one car and in front of the neighbor's Daughters car.  I was in the middle.  Yesterday North Catty removed snow on Howertown.  They removed the snow in front of the daughter's car because that is North Catty.  But Catty stopped removing snow on Howertown at Walnut.  So the snowpile at the corner reminds me of the "man without a country"  it's the snowpile without a town, but then......that's another day in Catasauqua.

Batter Batter Swing in the Snow

Parke, with snow on his hood at Coca-cola Park
Woo Hoo it was time to pick up our 18 game plan tickets for the Iron Pigs with only 19 Days until the first game and IT'S SNOWING!!!!!!!

Yup, snowing, now my grandfather would call this onion snow, because it is time to plant the onions which he always did around St. Patrick's Day, which is tomorrow.

However, did you know the term is basically only used in Pennsylvania.   I didn't know that; and it is defined as a light snow in late spring, after onions have been planted.  So I guess this isn't onion snow after all.

Well, there's only 3 days to spring so I guess - let it snow - for it shall melt quickly.  Spring is just a hop around the corner in Catty and so is baseball at the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs.  I can't wait!

So batter, batter swing and this is .....another day in Catasauqua

Snow in Catasauqua

This morning Digger and I took our daily morning walk, and the snow was falling.  It was only a light snow but it made everything look pretty.  I like this kind of snow and the Lehigh Valley has been very lucky this winter when it comes to snowfall.  That is, unless you like the snow, then you are not so lucky.

So far, the 2011-12 winter has averaged warmer than normal, with temperatures in much of the Northeast averaging at least 5 degrees above normal. The 60-day average was within the top 20 warmest on record at all but one of the first order stations in the region. This winter's prevailing storm path, combined with the warmer temperatures has kept significant snowfall at bay. Consequently, there is not a lot of snow on the ground, especially when compared to last year.

Even as I write this the snow that fell this morning is disappearing.  The one thing I love about an early morning walk when the snow is falling,  it is very quiet.  There wasn't a sound this morning, no birds, no children,  and no cars.

But now it's back to normal, at least for now, I hear it is suppose to be cold and windy tomorrow, so enjoy today; and that's another day in Catasauqua.

HO HO HO it's Halloween

Well, it is almost Halloween and we are seeing SNOW.  What the heck!  I wrote on Facebook yesterday that it was going to snow because I was going to walk in my first 5K and I figured it was an abomination against nature and it was going to revolt.  Well, it revolted so much that the 5K was cancelled, so I used the time to run to the Farmer's Market in Allentown.  The sleet was pelting the car on the way to the market and the snow started to come down on the way home.  Now for my readers not from this area, let me explain that snow, especially accumulating snow is very  unusual at this time of the year.

It is starting to look like a winter wonderland out there - I was just out taking a few pictures and wow it is laying on the grass fast.  I know this snow won't stay around long, the weather is bound to be warmer soon, but it does look pretty, for now.   But tonight is Trick or Treat, hopefully it will be postponed until tomorrow night, I had read on my water/sewer bill that the rain date for Trick or Treat was Sunday night, I wonder if they consider this snow date??...... and that's .... another day in Catasauqua.
